All Levels (Open Class)
The Sivananda Open Class is a vigorous yet relaxing class with emphasis on deep breathing, relaxation, and concentration. This traditional and classical session of training starts with initial relaxation (Savasana), followed by breathing exercises (Kapalabhati and Anuloma Viloma), six sets of sun salutations (Surya Namaskara), the standard program of 12 basic postures (Asanas), and the final relaxation.
An Open Class lasts 90 minutes and allows for some variation as given by the teacher. Students are advised to take a beginners' course before attending an open class. See: Beginner's Courses. No pre-registration is required. FIRST CLASS BY DONATION.
Gentle Yoga- Community Class
Gentle Yoga is for those challenged by age or inactivity. The class includes instruction in basic Yoga postures to enhance range of motion, strength and balance. Poses are adapted and modified so the student can maintain a steady, comfortable posture. The class also includes deep relaxation to create a stress-free body and peaceful mind.
Beginner Yoga Class
A perfect introduction to the basic Sivananda class. More instruction, more warm-ups and a slower pace. Tone and stretch. Abbreviated breathing exercises to calm and balance the body and mind. Modifications available for Sun Salutations and the postures, with active relaxation in between. Build up your strength, flexibility and endurance gradually.
Satsang begins with a silent, group meditation followed by kirtan/devotional chanting and an informal talk on the practical philosophy of Yoga and Vedanta. It is uplifting to practice together. Evening satsang usually lasts around 90 minutes; morning satsang is shorter, usually around 60 minutes. Chant books with translations and explanations are provided for you to follow and participate in the kirtan. The program is free and open to all. First-time participants welcome. Stay for a bowl of hearty vegetarian soup following Sunday evening satsang.
The Bhagavad Gita is one of the most important Hindu scriptures. Its message transcends the bounds of any particular religion or race, and is actually divine wisdom addressed to mankind for all times, in order to help human beings face and solve the ever-present problems of birth and death, of pain, suffering, fear, bondage, love and hate. It enables man to liberate himself from all limiting factors and reach a state of perfect balance, inner stability and mental peace, complete freedom from grief, fear and anxiety.
This class meets every week for guided study. Students are free to join at any point. Please check for availability of this class which happens on most, but not all, Fridays.
Puja is a beautiful, traditional Hindu worship ritual. At the Yoga Center, we practice it as taught by our founder, Swami Vishnudevananda. Different divine energies are invoked and worship takes place with the offering of milk, water, flowers and incense. Traditional Sanskrit mantras are chanted. This is considered to be a form of devotional meditation which opens your heart. All are welcome, there is no charge. Traditional donations of flowers, fruits or sweets are gratefully accepted, as are dedications.
